Zhu Rong and his wife run a very traditional tea farm in the Mountains of Yunnan in a village called Monku. Situated in the West side of China, the farm is walking distance to the four bordering countries: Nepal, Burma, Thailand, and India.
“In this region, the older the trees, the better the taste of the tea leaves - and our trees are over 800 years old.”
In China, these old trees are also venerated as Heavenly Beings, and in many places worshipped as a source of goodness and good health. They produce the famously known Puerh Teas. Due to this pristine location, completely isolated from industries and roads, the quality of the teas are simply superb and hopefully it will remain as such for many years to come.
Fujian – Zhan he
Xiao Yang comes from a family of tea growers from this small part of the Fujian Province where teas were mostly used for export due to their exceptional quality. This area has two different tea grounds, a lower and higher and of course the higher you go the better the quality of the teas. Xiao Yang was fortunate to be born in a family that was allocated land right on the top.
“When I wake up in the morning the clouds are still covering the fields and I joke we work in the Heavens”
All the teas are hand picked, Xiao Yang says that one can immediately notice the difference in the taste and look of the leaves compared with machine harvested. With all the technology that we know, nothing has replaced the gentle touch of the hand when plucking a tea leaf.
Fujian – Long Yuan
Xiao Wu was born in Long Yuan – Fujian Province where her family has been cultivating teas since 1750. This is truly a family business where all the family since the beginning is engaged in harvesting, preparing and more recently selling. Now most growers have a family member selling in the big cities.
“For me this is not work. I enjoy coming to work, having good teas and chatting with friends and customers”
They are extremely proud of their uninterrupted life of growing teas and have won prizes for their Alpine Oolong – Iron Godess - Jie Guan Yin tea.
